Founder's Award: David Askenazi, MD, MPH

  • The Neonatal Kidney Collaborative Founder's Award was given to Dr. David Askenazi, whose vision, dedication, and leadership over the past 11 years have been the driving force behind the creation and growth of this collaborative. The award was thoughtfully designed in the shape of a tree, a leaf, or the intricate branching of the kidney's vasculature--symbolizes the seedling that David planted when he brought the idea of the NKC to life. What began as a small group of people that seemed to like each other has grown, under his steady guidance, into a thriving, impactful community committed to improving outcomes for neonates with or at risk for kidney disease.
  • David's leadership has been defined by generosity--not only in sharing his time, knowledge, and experience, but also in the way he has uplifted others, mentored rising leaders, and welcomed diverse voices into the NKC. His unwavering commitment to helping the most vulnerable infants grow and thrive is reflected in every initiative, study, and relationship he has helped build. He has truly embodied the NKC's mission, always keeping the focus on giving these infants the best chance to reach their full potential.
  • In many ways, David has been our golden eagle--a visionary with a wide perspective, soaring high enough to see the big picture, yet always ready to dive in and support the details when needed. His energy, clarity, and relentless pursuit of better care have left a lasting legacy.
